I was shy as a kid. As a child I remember one thing, art always brought me out of my shell, which is why I find it to be so important in the classroom. I see it when my students are doing a craft or an art project. They begin to have conversations with one another that only happen during art. The kids that rarely talk begin to let loose and show everyone they have a voice. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKMicoAkUPPMEGfSifkNxE55xXnRILdwOd3AYmUYmq-BPf6JL2cRuogdhJdOOjHJ8CHQLltFJFCkVA3hd7g3pSTIaZMC7flF_0E8MqYZShCDU0ot3_jCVjkAzmaQ4hJjOfwvQQLdngZA/s1600/Capture.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyKMicoAkUPPMEGfSifkNxE55xXnRILdwOd3AYmUYmq-BPf6JL2cRuogdhJdOOjHJ8CHQLltFJFCkVA3hd7g3pSTIaZMC7flF_0E8MqYZShCDU0ot3_jCVjkAzmaQ4hJjOfwvQQLdngZA/s1600/Capture.JPG" height="308" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past Valentine's week my students used their knowledge of blending colors from dark to light to create their own masterpiece! Their hearts were just beautiful. I wanted to keep them and hang them up, but they really wanted to take them home. And so they did. I just hope they didn't end up crushed in their backpacks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwkhW_XylZtd75PIr412XbP4F3s_JrF1vUejt7OrEqBI0QveCGA38kECp-esGcH5yCRsXOHQ2RN5Pdmc_taEc6F-ObVp_ikpmux8v256UJmPCutSDR2jbmyba5jrV0fdHXbwYycYHKy4/s1600/Capture2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIwkhW_XylZtd75PIr412XbP4F3s_JrF1vUejt7OrEqBI0QveCGA38kECp-esGcH5yCRsXOHQ2RN5Pdmc_taEc6F-ObVp_ikpmux8v256UJmPCutSDR2jbmyba5jrV0fdHXbwYycYHKy4/s1600/Capture2.JPG" height="366" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To make the hearts I drew a heart template with small boxes throughout and copied onto white construction paper. Using their oil pastels the students chose three colors at a time and put them in order from dark to light. They chose one box and began coloring with the darkest shade. Next the students colored using the middle shade. Finally the students used the lightest shade to complete the box. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's amazing what kids can do when you let them try.</div>

I recently introduced another interactive notebook to my class. We use the writing notebook, the math notebook, the grammar notebook, and now. . .the reading literature notebook. I thought my kids would moan because that's what kids do when something is repetitive. Even something I would think they enjoy. They just get sick of the same thing over and over again. Sometimes I think they moan just for the sake of moaning. Have you ever had your kids copy something from the board and you have them erase a word and change it? They moan. You would think you had them throw away their papers, start over, and rewrite a ten page essay. Really all you've done is have them change <i>a </i>to <i>the</i>. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwFGbi9ilaslUE9Mjma6wZvvx1SXZInkLFDEKlPWRzsncJuOUln_2lBwxJL0R__6M8_uqVoG2FhkyroKeBVzcQ0_5YbK1LnRHdRShh86Tf91SL5htBKOqBKimOgVLtHyUzejcU-t8QUDg/s1600/cover.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwFGbi9ilaslUE9Mjma6wZvvx1SXZInkLFDEKlPWRzsncJuOUln_2lBwxJL0R__6M8_uqVoG2FhkyroKeBVzcQ0_5YbK1LnRHdRShh86Tf91SL5htBKOqBKimOgVLtHyUzejcU-t8QUDg/s1600/cover.JPG" height="320" width="281" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We just used a simple school journal.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixGic1wwmb0f9IV2FoPNDvCBdBCPQbBWmFPPukCV_c-j43_FkjbLOyl5AZlXNN-T20GKRxInbU6QnlleB4AW_Nm2g8GzJFvEBp5sMW5qppQAvZ5HODo736ILSQv0fUWGc8wu5_tjSakwE/s1600/20150112_092918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, like I said, I told my students we would start a new notebook and they cheered! Whew! This handy-dandy notebook has been pretty handy. The Common Core standards can look pretty complex, but the kids are handling them very well. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At the moment we are working on comparing and contrasting two versions of the same story. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Two versions of the same story. Armadilly Chili is one of my favorites. The illustrations are beautiful. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
With our notebooks, we are comparing and contrasting the characters, setting, plot, and central message. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4LIOQUU52Wo_oecIMeWFP-HjMeYcKtL1QVBLCaQODxSiSGZy68j_2rHlmtQgIVtrw5YJswfNCXS8lT28XBwWqmvroSro9Euhjv0-u0zCtudI5CZu4sODtjZ8LWF3G_r9u3JTghqY-kHI/s1600/compare.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4LIOQUU52Wo_oecIMeWFP-HjMeYcKtL1QVBLCaQODxSiSGZy68j_2rHlmtQgIVtrw5YJswfNCXS8lT28XBwWqmvroSro9Euhjv0-u0zCtudI5CZu4sODtjZ8LWF3G_r9u3JTghqY-kHI/s1600/compare.JPG" height="274" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here the students completed a notebook page for both <i>The Little Red Hen</i> and <i>Armadilly Chili. </i>Using that information, they completed a Venn diagram. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My favorite part is the <i>Central Message</i> cake. This notebook page includes common central messages. After reading a story, the kids take out their notebooks and look through the candles to find the central message of the story. I'm going to be honest, I had trouble determining the central message of a story as an adult. When I hear kids discussing this, I'm amazed. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioNSFKzMz4OPpToSPkaEp-4O3eM9syBK9arVe-WdMTdFEyX8FEKEju2bgwDnIylyP2sU8VZGA8iId9uWuAXB1sivx2Hf4cr_B0qPmnOGdV4MM7VbrmTuDSLoGiAGoysSInPNMf7yqRquo/s1600/central+message.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioNSFKzMz4OPpToSPkaEp-4O3eM9syBK9arVe-WdMTdFEyX8FEKEju2bgwDnIylyP2sU8VZGA8iId9uWuAXB1sivx2Hf4cr_B0qPmnOGdV4MM7VbrmTuDSLoGiAGoysSInPNMf7yqRquo/s1600/central+message.JPG" height="264" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Central Message</i> cake</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So the kids are happy because they think we're doing crafts and I am happy because they sound like high schoolers. Interactive notebooks have to be the best thing since sliced bread. </div>

<br />
<br />
There have been so many great things going on in our classroom.<br />
<br />
PENGUINS<br />
There was one year I became so obsessed with penguins in the classroom that I had to make my way to Sea World San Diego just to sit in the <i>Penguin Encounter</i> area and stare at all of the penguins I. . .my students. . .had learned about. This year, however, my obsession wasn't as strong. We had gingerbread going on at the same time and I can't obsess over both.<br />
<br />
So to get things started, I introduced my students to the research report. In the past, I've had students write their own reports, but this year I read the Common Core standard very, very carefully--<i>students will participate in SHARED research and writing projects</i>. Great! We were going to do this together and we had so much fun!<br />

DONORS CHOOSE<br />
This year I wrote a grant through Donors Choose to receive art supplies. My grant was funded and we have been having a blast! As you can see in the pictures above, there isn't a ridiculous amount of wasted paint around the penguins. Well, that's been part of the art lessons--how to use the art supplies. We received watercolors, temperas, clay, oil pastels, chalk, colored pencils, markers, and 8-Note bells for music.<br />

PARAGRAPH WRITING<br />
I know, this may not sound like a "favorite thing," but it so is! My students can whip out a paragraph as fast as they can tattle on a kid for crowding in line. But not just any paragraph. A paragraph with a topic sentence, details, temporal words, and a conclusion. They are doing so well, I had to think up something to add a little incentive for awesome writing. And that's when the <i>Pirate Award </i>was born. The award actually changes. It can be the <i>Snowman Award, </i>the <i>Gingerbread Award, </i>really the award is based on whatever topic we're writing on. Since the kids have been writing on about 2 topics a week, I had to spice it up. The awards are based on the ideas and creativity put into the writing. As long as I know what it says, I'm excited to read it. <br />

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love teaching kids to write. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past week I taught my kids the term <i>main topic</i>, which I was having trouble with because I'm used to <i>main idea</i>. The Common Core uses <i>topic </i>instead of <i>idea</i>. I'm getting used to it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because they're second graders, I needed to get their attention. And so I did. . . with gift bags. There were only six and I think the kids were confused by who would be getting one. Little did they know there weren't gifts in the bags. Unless you consider knowledge a gift. In that case, they all received the gift of knowledge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_f_hSxAFe6yko9_RgrlYU6HJjJ8mtggPn4zgn9CxDYJfnvu09lKWSa5L26MXcHonW667l0QrL0gfBAH1aqxGPmFKqEzV09aBXrI8nklgpjtSp9dLZnTxDeARrh5uSp_H_9zDIe7SrMkY/s1600/20140731_163411.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_f_hSxAFe6yko9_RgrlYU6HJjJ8mtggPn4zgn9CxDYJfnvu09lKWSa5L26MXcHonW667l0QrL0gfBAH1aqxGPmFKqEzV09aBXrI8nklgpjtSp9dLZnTxDeARrh5uSp_H_9zDIe7SrMkY/s1600/20140731_163411.jpg" height="320" width="292" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bags do say <i>Main Idea</i>, but have since been fixed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWGrQHzrxGWBlicl2nHEzpOlCOdNls-JKx5sUyUO9afl0k_fQeodt_fd3UVLUoBR8-Y90Cserv7_deF8U7Nvk5xJPsrv5ccDSBJEnvTVPiFczIA74BFIfC3Gv_jNgDpV3BkqjDnwKWXd0/s1600/20141104_091016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWGrQHzrxGWBlicl2nHEzpOlCOdNls-JKx5sUyUO9afl0k_fQeodt_fd3UVLUoBR8-Y90Cserv7_deF8U7Nvk5xJPsrv5ccDSBJEnvTVPiFczIA74BFIfC3Gv_jNgDpV3BkqjDnwKWXd0/s1600/20141104_091016.jpg" height="259" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLNRH210Fs3NgF_P6bzfTqGYC5zAyYIZywD0IT56QWb6Dl0BmFbNPiWJxsCbnWvLW8PEHd3nihEiFQCxzAkk8aGQ07Foo92eS33wRhxw8N-0QI5rEBU94Wh7y5ssbiMRikM_Snv1RVhgo/s1600/20141104_091150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLNRH210Fs3NgF_P6bzfTqGYC5zAyYIZywD0IT56QWb6Dl0BmFbNPiWJxsCbnWvLW8PEHd3nihEiFQCxzAkk8aGQ07Foo92eS33wRhxw8N-0QI5rEBU94Wh7y5ssbiMRikM_Snv1RVhgo/s1600/20141104_091150.jpg" height="320" width="196" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Inside each bag were some picture. We'll call these details. The pictures all had something in common and it was up to the kids to figure this out. We called this the <i>main topic</i>.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Many of the <i>main topics</i> were the same, but some of the kids thought outside of the box and came up with more creative <i>main topics</i>. It was all good to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the group activity, each student was given a worksheet with a graphic organizer on it. From this day forward, they will be seeing this almost daily in my classroom. I find this web to be so useful for so many different subjects.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-7YfKXobhAvX8MyfgNvnpryf6YoNJKjdQHS_ASSdITYVTGLHmtItEODqFul_W0IsmFEXxEbU6JCAuHmc_9ihvFz7TEbquotGwz3OqMrkz3_Kk2TpYcCZz_wY2Yxtvgh65zfJE_LKGBHw/s1600/20141104_100814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-7YfKXobhAvX8MyfgNvnpryf6YoNJKjdQHS_ASSdITYVTGLHmtItEODqFul_W0IsmFEXxEbU6JCAuHmc_9ihvFz7TEbquotGwz3OqMrkz3_Kk2TpYcCZz_wY2Yxtvgh65zfJE_LKGBHw/s1600/20141104_100814.jpg" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Much like the gift bag activity, the kids looked at some pictures and had to identify the <i>main topic</i> of the picture. This particular worksheet had the beach as its topic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCNmGoD370eT8sF0PEgHvXf2UdulzJii8naYx5ybPZSMMOK9NIaqxjZu1r1gBTixuj_ir0Qq5_7Lu3UivQiH9Yi1LJw9rbwYrz_tEF8_gm1kc5ls-h7AeYditCrW3LiRM-UKJPlFKF3i4/s1600/20141104_101257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCNmGoD370eT8sF0PEgHvXf2UdulzJii8naYx5ybPZSMMOK9NIaqxjZu1r1gBTixuj_ir0Qq5_7Lu3UivQiH9Yi1LJw9rbwYrz_tEF8_gm1kc5ls-h7AeYditCrW3LiRM-UKJPlFKF3i4/s1600/20141104_101257.jpg" height="228" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the movie theater.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGxICL6q4ZcvKbCFycyR7G7zc0fAArOmidoel76Mh_c2dfIFke7oPh2prB10VtIt59T70Qkk1_P9k-eruY-fO9P0l-BBVRe631JYuidzKlX8T5xpocI8Km3wG-lxqkKchUKTVAKzpWlck/s1600/20141105_095740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGxICL6q4ZcvKbCFycyR7G7zc0fAArOmidoel76Mh_c2dfIFke7oPh2prB10VtIt59T70Qkk1_P9k-eruY-fO9P0l-BBVRe631JYuidzKlX8T5xpocI8Km3wG-lxqkKchUKTVAKzpWlck/s1600/20141105_095740.jpg" height="248" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids were getting the hang of this whole concept so we used the graphic organizer to begin writing paragraphs. We wrote the first two together then they were given ten extra minutes to add more details to their paragraphs to make them more interesting. They had such a great time and felt so proud of their writing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQEd0ruevUI7jjfhabP5uZq3Xvvx63KJmiQGRYVEWVQa-XS1rbWYhjY3MTDZWQCbQmukKtyE33UnHjf0yB3qZLoEg1HkhAqDPPhPJEIoPlYKo9RUDP9X_FloYX5u8WFolTUsQdInQhWQ0/s1600/20141107_121812.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQEd0ruevUI7jjfhabP5uZq3Xvvx63KJmiQGRYVEWVQa-XS1rbWYhjY3MTDZWQCbQmukKtyE33UnHjf0yB3qZLoEg1HkhAqDPPhPJEIoPlYKo9RUDP9X_FloYX5u8WFolTUsQdInQhWQ0/s1600/20141107_121812.jpg" height="228" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now most of them are writing paragraphs on their own. They are so excited to share. Each time they see me pull out a <i>Main Topic Worksheet</i>, I hear the "Yes!"es throughout the classroom. Once again, mission accomplished!<br />

I'm linking up with <a href="http://mrslabrasciano.blogspot.com/2014/11/holidays-around-blog.html">Learning Lessons with Mrs. Labrasciano</a> for a holiday linky party. <br />
<br />
This is my favorite time of year. When I think of cold weather, I think of a little brown cookie we call the gingerbread man. I pull out every version of the gingerbread man book I own and try really hard not to read them all at once. There's something about these stories that make my school year complete. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_M2TxQJl-YHgh7VITQlb5fF0OFuewzEGXiYKI12UDZiS9WqB7BbYvuCd_e7yGFn-c-epWpuUDqlnGIuv5zilv9-giSrViQFrmbMqjjix3lMxjgbGPLReyWRis_42QSgI_gU65J281Ew/s1600/gingerbread+man+books.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2_M2TxQJl-YHgh7VITQlb5fF0OFuewzEGXiYKI12UDZiS9WqB7BbYvuCd_e7yGFn-c-epWpuUDqlnGIuv5zilv9-giSrViQFrmbMqjjix3lMxjgbGPLReyWRis_42QSgI_gU65J281Ew/s1600/gingerbread+man+books.JPG" height="259" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After hearing so many stories, the students become pretty familiar with the structure of this story.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids identify the characters, setting, plot, and refrain of the stories. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQNKRKmgFDytDgJhfX1uSfdsFsRuggXP8jESiqViq8QTOyp00sC52i4XYXxXTyTvYGI7aeKpbmMIMQFdO7Gt1HFLaP5AFcu5Gg3GblgmPSKLNmjVW0ZUpTbgq8Ba1RFt8GzB0bEhm_EvU/s1600/gingerbread+man+blog.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQNKRKmgFDytDgJhfX1uSfdsFsRuggXP8jESiqViq8QTOyp00sC52i4XYXxXTyTvYGI7aeKpbmMIMQFdO7Gt1HFLaP5AFcu5Gg3GblgmPSKLNmjVW0ZUpTbgq8Ba1RFt8GzB0bEhm_EvU/s1600/gingerbread+man+blog.JPG" height="261" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After these activities, the kiddos are ready to write their own stories. The repetition of the stories and the refrains make story writing easy and predictable for young writers. The words will just flow, which makes them feel successful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

I have a thematic <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Word-Wall-Writing-Stations-Halloween-and-Zoo-Words-1479755">word wall</a> in my classroom that my students just love. The word wall includes writing activities to work on independently. Because my students enjoy the activities so much, I thought I'd offer one as a freebie. I hope your kids enjoy it also!</div>

Each year I'm dying with excitement to teach Bold Beginnings. It's like I want to just jump right in and skip every other important piece of writing because once I teach kids about Bold Beginnings, their writing becomes amazing! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So last week my world became complete. I was able to teach my 2nd graders the best thing ever, BOLD BEGINNINGS! Yay! I love it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
OK, rewind. . . I was also really impressed by how well my students picked up on this temporal words activity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXRkXJ7_1RWqu9xrXW5fYOhOqhWNZ8TQtrbbGEHzXEBIlcHjkixN_t8v1YnOWufbvPa2VzD_2BpWLB8UZHH2g7cWhrmPlVRC7TR-cvv6UOeAAaaCLcyyljgR3VrGbkT9cI6P4KCyIkW6M/s1600/20141015_101141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXRkXJ7_1RWqu9xrXW5fYOhOqhWNZ8TQtrbbGEHzXEBIlcHjkixN_t8v1YnOWufbvPa2VzD_2BpWLB8UZHH2g7cWhrmPlVRC7TR-cvv6UOeAAaaCLcyyljgR3VrGbkT9cI6P4KCyIkW6M/s1600/20141015_101141.jpg" height="197" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We put together the temporal word notebook page in out <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Writing-Notebook-for-the-Primary-Grades-Free-Gift-With-Purchase-1312923">Interactive Notebooks</a>. The students will use it to reference while writing. Right now, the kids are writing a personal narrative after tons of class practice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB7HEHRrtUDOisS4tZOTpAWepLLJZqxBlb06_pxT6LBEHmCgYxcYkrsfPsGNgvEYdsZiDfSPZgm-rVE76xCqW4a-yn_kOLSDpZg9bIz7hhYLi3OiIsv8OlaOua7ItVZkMXoMxFVG0W0QM/s1600/20141015_101146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB7HEHRrtUDOisS4tZOTpAWepLLJZqxBlb06_pxT6LBEHmCgYxcYkrsfPsGNgvEYdsZiDfSPZgm-rVE76xCqW4a-yn_kOLSDpZg9bIz7hhYLi3OiIsv8OlaOua7ItVZkMXoMxFVG0W0QM/s1600/20141015_101146.jpg" height="167" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Interactive Notebooks, where have you been my whole life?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just love how the kids have these notes to look back on. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
OK back to the Bold Beginnings!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It all started with this book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj_9N-hHm0WEREi3JoleiGVPUT8e7993Jde2-95a7nCXGlbXxVPZfjrbUe_1nHFRMJ7XgRAct9bawGOCMZh75Tb9orPE3ZvLxi9WP-ViyJa9ykzqwYXP_R9KwdmVnjzI1KrZkhYk8jTJ4/s1600/IMG_3000.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj_9N-hHm0WEREi3JoleiGVPUT8e7993Jde2-95a7nCXGlbXxVPZfjrbUe_1nHFRMJ7XgRAct9bawGOCMZh75Tb9orPE3ZvLxi9WP-ViyJa9ykzqwYXP_R9KwdmVnjzI1KrZkhYk8jTJ4/s1600/IMG_3000.JPG" height="290" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's filled with sounds heard throughout a city, which is a great way to introduce onomatopoeia. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgrFJTtAAf5DlJTTXUPiWQ3-5BQWZZcT097z6F0EA5Xs0FUbT2D8Mxa051uMXPJuF8Q8RLksv6Q3RtVvNKSeN8X1tLqCzcTbzGgqk5ISMahIipevn_9LavIBu1fqKLOlxJNW9v7gd0zEU/s1600/20141016_105606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgrFJTtAAf5DlJTTXUPiWQ3-5BQWZZcT097z6F0EA5Xs0FUbT2D8Mxa051uMXPJuF8Q8RLksv6Q3RtVvNKSeN8X1tLqCzcTbzGgqk5ISMahIipevn_9LavIBu1fqKLOlxJNW9v7gd0zEU/s1600/20141016_105606.jpg" height="320" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That's a real life kid page right there. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We put together this notebook page and wrote a Bold Beginning under each flap. The kids had so much fun making the <i>Oo oo! Ah ah! </i>noises of a monkey.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once we tried out each B.B., we chose a new topic. . . <i>Halloween!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kids worked in groups to write all four of the B.B.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The thing I enjoy most about teaching writing is teaching kids to let go of spelling. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Don't worry about your spelling!" I say. And once kids let go, you get some great writing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzbNdFkp-PgThhMEcknxyK3a8AM0kP0Ai1yz6XcHaGOnabBOk67MtRxf5Ml9N6g3YcjQB0k_3vsmmqPiCUmpBNgBSKxidpt4VmCDnpgo46I62Hh0tlcg2cXYkiWVB8_HQHhgZZE8xeOZw/s1600/20141017_130822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzbNdFkp-PgThhMEcknxyK3a8AM0kP0Ai1yz6XcHaGOnabBOk67MtRxf5Ml9N6g3YcjQB0k_3vsmmqPiCUmpBNgBSKxidpt4VmCDnpgo46I62Hh0tlcg2cXYkiWVB8_HQHhgZZE8xeOZw/s1600/20141017_130822.jpg" height="299" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
More practice. More fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today my students had to apply this new learning to their narratives. Each was able to write four different Bold Beginnings to topics of their choosing. I was so proud of them. <br />The best part, they had fun writing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mission accomplished. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<u>Day of the Dead</u>, by Tony Johnston, follows a family getting ready for the Day of the Dead celebration by cooking tamales, baking pan de muertos, and decorating with cempasuchil.</div>

The bright, beautiful pictures draw the children in and the Spanish words keep them interested as they listen to their teacher either try to read the words or read them with ease, which is amazing to little ones.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the kiddos hear this story, which introduces them to Dia de los Muertos, they make a vocabulary book and an easy reader to practice reading some new words.</div>

What's better than getting students to make the connection between reading and writing? With <i>Writing a Narrative: Writing a Sequence of Events and Adding Closure</i>, you'll do just that!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students will have a great time understanding something not-so-necessarily-interesting. . .story structure. Once they understand the vocabulary, they'll use it in their own writing. </div>

As we start the year creating out Interactive Writing Notebooks, we are beginning to put together our Interactive Math Notebooks. There are just so many words students need to know in order to understand math, so I decided to put together a math notebook which focuses on vocabulary.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiIkAKYLGf0oLHda2HIa7cZAkYegwHOT1wE44yswYfGZXAzDZbQkGiJwqOyztTLQz-avxHhouSldFGc2dS9w5vT7aNXJHYf5h5AQ973JW7h6sYpvnhfK8nllmW_m2w8j6uLFVbRWyrkgE/s1600/math+notebook.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiIkAKYLGf0oLHda2HIa7cZAkYegwHOT1wE44yswYfGZXAzDZbQkGiJwqOyztTLQz-avxHhouSldFGc2dS9w5vT7aNXJHYf5h5AQ973JW7h6sYpvnhfK8nllmW_m2w8j6uLFVbRWyrkgE/s1600/math+notebook.JPG" height="320" width="248" /></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So on Monday I told the kids that we would be starting a new notebook. And with that announcement, I heard cheers. I love how much <i>they </i>love these notebooks. I showed them their new notebooks, which apparently look like <i>Minecraft</i>. When it comes to video games, I'm clueless. After the kids got past the <i>Minecraft </i>conversation, we got to work.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We began with the word <i>equal</i>. Although students use the word and write equal signs daily, I've decided many kiddos don't actually understand what equal means. We worked on the word each day this week, and soon the students were gaining a deeper understanding of what equal means in math.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In the meantime, we were learning about arrays. I don't like to work on this many pages in a day/week, but we had some catching up to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
First the kids needed to see an array and understand what it is. Each notebook section begins by developing an understanding of the vocabulary used in math. Then students work on the concept. Whether it be in the notebook or in their math books, students need the vocabulary to understand what they are doing. After we put together the notebook page, the kids made their own arrays with stickers while referring to their notebooks.The following day I had them write an equation to match the arrays they made from stickers.</div>

On Wednesday, we continued building on our new word--<i>array</i>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids colored their pages. Then we cut out the pieces and matched them with an equation.</div>

On Thursday, the kids added to the arrays section. Underneath each array is an equation to match it.<br />

I gave each group a stack of hamburgers. Who wouldn't love arrays made of hamburgers? So one person made an array and the other group members had to write an equation to match the array. Each student had a turn making an array. Who knew arrays could be so much fun?<br />

Before starting our notebooks, we focused on the word equation. We use the word daily in math and it is becoming part of their vocabulary. This week we will start on the word digit and begin learning about place value.<br />
<br />
I see a difference in my students' abilities to understand math with the focus on math vocabulary. I'm excited to see the growth! And I am excited to see their excitement!<br />

I'm linking up with <a href="http://kreativeinkinder.blogspot.com/2014/09/dear-future-me.html">Kreative in Kinder</a> with a great idea. . . a letter to myself.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Like Crystal wrote, we tend to forget what the first few weeks of school are like. When they roll around, we wonder what we've gotten ourselves into. I tend to ask myself if I started off wrong and ruined the year. Did I spend enough time on rules and procedures? Slowly but surely it all falls into place. Very slowly. And then the year goes on and things go well and the year ends and then it begins again. So I'm writing myself a letter to read at the start of the 2015-2016 school year to remind myself that everything will be OK.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Broad to specific</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I showed the students a "photo album" (PowerPoint) of our pretend trip to the zoo. It showed the San Diego Zoo, some animals, a giraffe, a woman feeding the giraffe, and a giraffe's tongue. So we took a very broad topic (a trip to the zoo) and made it much more specific (feeding a giraffe at the zoo). I tell the kids that finding one specific part of a trip, day, birthday. . .makes your writing more interesting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
Now that we've covered the important components of Ideas, I will read various mentor texts to the class so students can see how authors use the trait.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On Thursday, I read Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Enemy Pie" class="product-image image img book" data-expand-image="1" src="http://img1.imagesbn.com/p/9780811827782_p0_v1_s260x420.JPG" height="323" id="rnd-1147890594" itemprop="image" width="260" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The story is about a little boy with an enemy. His dad comes up with a plan to get rid of his enemy, which is to make an enemy pie.<br />
<br />
There's so much more to this story, but I was just getting to the point of the activity. It's a really cute story. I recommend it like I do every mentor text I suggest in the<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"> <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Writing-Notebook-for-the-Primary-Grades-Free-Gift-With-Purchase-1312923">Interactive Writing Notebook</a></span>.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After reading the book, we discussed the <i>ideas </i>the author used is his story. The story gets kids' imaginations going thinking about the ingredients in an enemy pie. So, the activity I created gets kids using their <i>ideas </i>to come up with the ingredients in the pie.<br />

I'm linking up with <a href="http://teachingtrio.blogspot.com/">The Teaching Trio</a> for The Sunday Scoop.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been traveling a lot lately and really have more housework to do than I can handle, so this whole scoop should read something about cleaning. But it doesn't because that would be boring!</div>

This week our class was able to put together two pages of our Interactive Writing Notebooks. I created this notebook to get kids excited about writing. Kids enjoy writing when we give them the tools to become good writers. They also become more excited about writing when we free them of being perfect spellers. The number one question I hear while students are writing is, "How do you spell . . ?" I just tell them not to worry about it and just get your ideas out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So this week we practiced using details to describe some animals. Often we read <i>I saw _____</i> from our students. I figured, why not spruce it up with some detail. And so they did.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I know there's no writing for you to read. That's because, after taking ten pictures, these were the best ones. So many cute sentences. So many blurry pictures. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sentences said things like. . . <i>I saw a green and red owl. </i>Or <i>I saw a stinky gray raccoon.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favorite activities is <i>Be Specific</i>. A few years ago I told students they need to be specific in their writing without explaining what that meant. What was I thinking?! So after realizing I should probably explain that word, I told a little story.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It goes like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">Sam wanted a dog, so he asked his mom for one. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">The next day Sam's mom brought home a big, white dog with floppy ears.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">Sam said, "No mom. I wanted a small, white dog."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">The next day his mom brought him a new dog. It was a small, white dog with floppy ears.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">Sam said, "No mom. I wanted a small white dog with tiny ears.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">The next day his mom brought home a small, white dog with tiny ears.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">Sam said, "No mom. I wanted a small, white dog with tiny ears and brown spots."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;">At this point his mom was frustrated and she said, "You should have been more specific!"</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This story might not be pet-friendly, but the kids love it. I have little pictures I show them. I explain to them that being specific, or exact, helps your reader understand your writing better.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are some of their <i>specific dogs.</i></div>

Teaching young learners to work in cooperative groups and to share responsibilities can be a JOB! These cooperative group cards enable kids to take responsibility and to be a contributing member of the group. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I start off teaching one job at a time, usually the group leader. I allow the students to become familiar with the responsibilities of the leader then I introduce another job.</div>

This week I'm giving a shout out to my kiddos. With their help, I have had a great couple of weeks. I have one Made-It and my sweetie pies have one they'd like to share.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It all begins with the simple sentence in 2nd grade, but quickly progresses into expanded sentence. Practice is important so after a week of writing simple sentences, I have set up the <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Write-a-Sentence-Station-1399209" target="_blank"><i>Write a Sentence Station</i></a>. The kids can manipulate subjects, verbs, and adjectives to write simple sentences and expanded sentences.</div>

My kiddos started their <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Writing-Notebook-for-the-Primary-Grades-Free-Gift-With-Purchase-1312923" target="_blank">Interactive Writing Notebooks</a> last week. This week we added our <i>Juicy Details</i> page, which helped them write expanded sentences using adjectives. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
After making our notebook pages, we wrote expanded sentences about the foods we described. Lastly, we revised our class narrative by adding "Juicy Details." I love how things just fall into place!<br />

It's back to school! Back to the rules and procedures and back to waking up REALLY early! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our first week was like most. We spent time discussing rules and procedures. We talked about manners and my favorite, tattling. OK tattling is definitely not my favorite, but talking about what tattling is and is not is my favorite. Why? Because once we talk about it, I rarely hear tattling. It's a miracle! I used this freebie by Kelly Witt from TpT. I highly recommend it.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />On Tuesday I pulled out the base ten blocks. Of course kids look at them and want to play. So I give the kids time to play with them. Once we've played, they are no longer toys, but tools for learning. I'm so mean.</div>

All in all it was a great week. I have some really cool kids. I love my job. Teaching is one of the most challenging jobs out there, but I wouldn't want to do anything else. And it takes a pretty awesome person to do it! </div>

It's Two for Tuesday! I know you'll like what I have to offer and it is such a good deal</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First item is a fun zoo unit!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Zoo-to-You-Performance-Tasks-for-2nd-Graders-1230805" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Zoo-to-You-Performance-Tasks-for-2nd-Graders-1230805" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd2rp8iPtCr7pk9zpxlcGgx8uvTyou3FCdTOE6uArSpd7nUBI2Fa5CAG1WO6wXWemaLvzclqblx7y1q4DccQgno7MZdSzBrURI9RGLsSQX3j_xhPaC8nrnpaHCCoO2iK5tbeIfM6gPmEY/s1600/zoo+to+you.PNG" height="248" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Students get to use the information they have learned and engage in five activities about graphing while taking a survey about students' favorite animals, repeated addition while counting animal legs and making a zoo map, adding money while making a menu for the zoo snack bar, and presenting information about an animal at the zoo theater. These are 2nd grade C.C. standards, but can be a great review for 3rd graders.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a sample activity:<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
All of my students are familiar with the writing table. It's my favorite place in the classroom. It has so many great resources. It probably has too much stuff on it. I probably need a bigger writing table.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The writing table is where kids go to make their writing better, to find some cool writing supplies, and to sit if they need a time out . . . I don't have another place for them to sit.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So what's on the writing table that makes it my favorite place in the classroom? I'll show you! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This week, I'll tell you about the Color Dictionary. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To make your own Color Dictionary you'll need a box of 64 or more Crayola crayons, some blank paper, and a folder or something to store your dictionary. I don't buy crayons other than Crayola so I'm not sure if you can use other brands. It's all about the color names that Crayola uses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
On separate sheets of paper, write or print out basic colors--red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have done this activity with my entire class and gave each group a color to work on together. It worked out fine.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So how does this Color Dictionary work?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When student's are in the revising stage of writing, they go to the writing table to make their writing better. One way they do this is by adding color detail. If a student is describing his brown dog, he goes to the Color Dictionary and turns to the <i>Brown</i> page, looks through all of the shades of brown then decides which shade of brown his dog matches. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So instead of writing <i>My brown dog is the best!</i>, he would write <i>My <strike>brown</strike> chestnut brown dog is the best!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kids absolutely love using the Color Dictionary. It's probably one of the best ways to teach revising. I mean how many times have you asked your kids if there's anything they can add to make their writing better? With the Color Dictionary, you can remind them to add colors to make their writing better.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you're reading your student's writing, you'll be so entertained. You'll actually want to read it! Did I just say that? Come on, you know their writing can get a little boring. With the Color Dictionary, kids will have more fun and it'll shine through!<br />
<br />

This week's Monday Made It was inspired by two blog posts from last week.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiad68z5WqZ6tZlR5KW4OYaS1vIMSI_-dxEC2nCGqzVdK-4hfkekFVn1dJRughhgfLpBRDTlA8h050BHzEicgvMH2101UqmRAyhGXkWRSlsbn1q-6jFGTYDKyCX3b47ZaU1vLLIwTkxS282/s1600/Button+1.png" /></div>
I loved the "Caught bee-having" bucket idea from <a href="http://missnelsonsgotthecamera.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Miss Nelson</a>. I had to work my creative magic so the bucket could fit in my room. This is what I came up with!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNIGn_t-rWhZTGIFByHlZ2bH8czBApuQBiku1Q4_bYPXD5kQwh1o0w9a3XEa_RRvigOQ9Z5Vo6xVwKuQVAT1xO1UY9jVnrzB0pSxApzhGIHtw9h0Yi298EBg1B74iOgl2-0fuKwS2weJY/s1600/IMG_3073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNIGn_t-rWhZTGIFByHlZ2bH8czBApuQBiku1Q4_bYPXD5kQwh1o0w9a3XEa_RRvigOQ9Z5Vo6xVwKuQVAT1xO1UY9jVnrzB0pSxApzhGIHtw9h0Yi298EBg1B74iOgl2-0fuKwS2weJY/s1600/IMG_3073.JPG" height="320" width="255" /></a></div>

I took it a step further . . .I have a glass jar filled with Smarties in my classroom. About once a day I ask the kids a "smarty question," which is a question that is higher order and requires some thinking. If a student gets the smarty question correct, she gets a Smartie. So I made this new bucket for Smarties. I've made it available at my TpT store for free if you're interested.<br />

The next idea I found at <a href="http://foremanteaches.blogspot.com/2014/07/monday-made-it-supply-drawers-mentor.html" target="_blank">Foreman Teaches</a>. She made a bucket for mentor text, which students can read after she reads to the class. I loved the idea because my students also love to read my books after I have read them. With this idea, the books are in one basket and the students can read them independently when they are finished with their work.<br />

Next I made a behavior clip chart to match the sweetness theme that I have going on in my classroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUnV4wav3JRK-m9fBrn128yVFdq_-CWUCrPtM4GQfQTfHZdcjxm9I5-ZHZqK9hxQ6Meop-9T0-_n-sYaTAk6Pug9cwiMjI1pWakYU5Px_qJZG0sfN6hi_HxIr6sRTocKKX6EURdfnp3L4/s1600/IMG_3053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUnV4wav3JRK-m9fBrn128yVFdq_-CWUCrPtM4GQfQTfHZdcjxm9I5-ZHZqK9hxQ6Meop-9T0-_n-sYaTAk6Pug9cwiMjI1pWakYU5Px_qJZG0sfN6hi_HxIr6sRTocKKX6EURdfnp3L4/s1600/IMG_3053.JPG" height="320" width="89" /></a></div>

This is also found for free in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sweet-Candy-Theme-Classroom-Decor-1337181" target="_blank">TpT </a>store :)<br />

<br />
And it doesn't end there! I also printed and laminated my grammar anchor charts. I color code them so students know when they're looking at red, that means nouns (blue=verbs, purple=pronouns and yellow=adjectives). I clipped them to coordinating ribbon, but plan on using Velcro to attach them.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm linking up with Mrs. Jump's Class once again for Book Talk Tuesday!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I want to share one of the first books I read to my class (excluding all of those first day of school favorites :)), <i>Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!</i> written by Wynton Marsalis.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/squeak-rumble-whomp-whomp-whomp-wynton-marsalis/1111671779?ean=9780763639914" target="_blank"><img alt="Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!: A Sonic Adventure" class="product-image image img book" data-expand-image="1" src="http://img1.imagesbn.com/p/9780763639914_p0_v1_s260x420.JPG" height="290" id="rnd-1020762628" itemprop="image" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!</i> is a book about the sounds heard through a busy neighborhood. From the sound of a door opening to the sound of trucks rumbling and the sound of music playing.<br />
<br />
When I saw this book, I thought it would be perfect for teaching writing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRVBGxsTr976Brr6H1JrqG27kvNokf_yn_7RldofEoucW7EJ9sJ0zstnlLjBKeisD8RxLy0c6lEBUTYPKWBj6HMa-FK0NizrHBiImvYnTLBTU23wO90H199GFMQ8R69MtOJ-JOylFY4RI/s1600/IMG_3001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRVBGxsTr976Brr6H1JrqG27kvNokf_yn_7RldofEoucW7EJ9sJ0zstnlLjBKeisD8RxLy0c6lEBUTYPKWBj6HMa-FK0NizrHBiImvYnTLBTU23wO90H199GFMQ8R69MtOJ-JOylFY4RI/s1600/IMG_3001.JPG" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We always begin the year with
writing a narrative about the first day of school. I like to get my kids
started right away with Bold Beginnings--types of leads which make
writing awesome! The lead, or Bold Beginning, I introduce to my kiddos
is "Listen Up!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJZfQhReLK7rTrK1u8HNdR8EwG9OekxEWKp6s1A5pincsV0aFBuus2jteGsUyizqrqajvb8lADutRnrCqdEnz8AR4tVjSRkG2BTuiHHCIigZZSZ-oTWfUsoW3l309EDOuTY3GPLyBjs0/s1600/IMG_3003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKJZfQhReLK7rTrK1u8HNdR8EwG9OekxEWKp6s1A5pincsV0aFBuus2jteGsUyizqrqajvb8lADutRnrCqdEnz8AR4tVjSRkG2BTuiHHCIigZZSZ-oTWfUsoW3l309EDOuTY3GPLyBjs0/s1600/IMG_3003.JPG" height="294" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I tell the kids we can start our writing with a sound, which will make
our writing more interesting. Generally, they have no idea what this
means. Who can blame them, they're six and seven. So I read the book and
they hear <i>and </i>see the sounds the author is describing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG2bUEzrgiQg1W46tUTYNGP2rcsxp8EpAmYem8j37od5dE1vr7QV1s_3uUf8rf1D1v2um1WIvzr4zSZ03s6iCR8WNvtoJ0jnPtzdooT86MOncMp-RNhMndBTCCFPlZr6WW_LtnbNqR2wg/s1600/IMG_3004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG2bUEzrgiQg1W46tUTYNGP2rcsxp8EpAmYem8j37od5dE1vr7QV1s_3uUf8rf1D1v2um1WIvzr4zSZ03s6iCR8WNvtoJ0jnPtzdooT86MOncMp-RNhMndBTCCFPlZr6WW_LtnbNqR2wg/s1600/IMG_3004.JPG" height="299" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After reading the book, we discuss the sounds they heard in the story. We talk about how the author gets to decided how to spell the sounds and there is no right way. Then the kids get to practice! I give them this worksheet and let them make up some sounds. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2eVV7WcRORJUgV7H8YlikMC8w1yE_lBWzPnhrKFmjEASqJSj6o5bUPlejl1boo1Ur9bS8I2yp-FQ9p1fxwStqlyKVGMJ_kYqH0dXuRY_wovWkf9HomV9zaxmEHTBvRtQGd3C9jOIwuIM/s1600/listen+up!.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2eVV7WcRORJUgV7H8YlikMC8w1yE_lBWzPnhrKFmjEASqJSj6o5bUPlejl1boo1Ur9bS8I2yp-FQ9p1fxwStqlyKVGMJ_kYqH0dXuRY_wovWkf9HomV9zaxmEHTBvRtQGd3C9jOIwuIM/s1600/listen+up!.PNG" height="247" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After they get the hang of this, we write our class narrative, which begins with a "Listen Up!" beginning.The kids use "Listen Up!" all year long. As soon as I read their first sentences, I'm hooked!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are some student samples from their narrative writing:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Blop! Blop! I can hear the fish making bubbles.</i></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Yay! Whoo hoo! I heard excited kids.</i></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Boom! Boom! I hear my favorite band.</i></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Please! Please! Please! I hear myself whining. </i></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
